Famous people who were fostered

Most children who have fostered go on to be hugely successful in a whole range of careers. In fact, a number of famous stars have spent time in care or the foster system. Here are some inspirational celebs who were fostered or adopted before going on to be world famous. 

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela is one the most famous and important political figures of recent times. He was the first black president of South Africa, anti-Apartheid leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner. When his father died when he was 9 years old, Nelson was fostered by the chief of his tribe.

Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs is an inspirational figure who co-foundered Apple. He went on to transform the world of technology and make Apple a worldwide brand. As a result Steve Jobs became a multimillionaire by the age of 30.

Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx is an uber-talented and versitile actor. His filmography includes: Tarantino Drama Django Unchained, the musical Dream Girls and family favourite Rio. On top if this he has recorded several top-selling songs such as Gold Digga alongside Kanye West.

Simone Biles

American Gymnast Simone Biles was fostered due to her parents’ alcohol and drug addictions. She won an incredible 4 gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and recently made history by becoming the first woman to win four all-around titles at the World Championships.

Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan is a immensely popular actor after starring as James Bond in no less than 4 films. His roles, in classics such as Mrs Doubtfire and Mamma Mia, have seen him cement himself in Hollywood’s hall of fame. The Irish actor spent several years in the care of various friends and family after his father left his mother and she went to nursing school.

John Lennon

John Lennon was a member of the Beatles, the pop group who racked up a whopping twenty number one singles. John Lennon is one of the most influential figures in popular music, as well as being an advocate for peace. From the age of four, Lennon was fostered by his Uncle George and Aunt Mimi. It was his aunt who taught him to play the banjo and the rest, as they say, is history. 


Actress and singer Cher has had a hugely successful career spanning over 50 years. Cher has also enjoyed musical success with hits such as I Got You Babe and Believe. She has also appeared and starred in films such as Mermaids, Burlesque and Mammia Mia 2. Due to financial pressures and illness, Cher was placed briefly into foster care by her mother.

Marilyn Monroe

The silver screen’s most iconic star, Marilyn Monroe delivered dazzling performances in films such as Some Like It Hot. Notorious as one of the most beautiful women ever, the blonde bombshell then known as Norma Jeane spent time in various foster homes up until the age of eleven.

James Dean

Hollywood’s original bad-boy, James Dean was a talented actor who played the lead roles in genre-defining films Rebel Without a Cause and East of Eden. When he was five years old Dean’s mother died and he was fostered by his aunt and uncle who lived on a farm in Indiana.
